‘My Sister, The Serial Killer’ Reveals A Dark, Complicated Relationship Between Sisters
Want to hear a funny story? I actually bought My Sister, the Serial Killer two years ago because I saw Hilary Duff post about it on her Instagram. This proves two things: 1) Hilary Duff has great taste in books, and 2) the power of celebrity influence is real!
I really enjoyed this book the first time around, so I decided to pick it up again after hitting a bit of a reading slump this month. I actually started reading Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty earlier, but called it quits after about 100 pages. Because if there’s nothing enticing in the first 100 pages of a 450-page book, then is it really worth sticking around for? was a tad disappointed, to be honest, because I’ve read a few of Moriarty’s other books (Big Little Lies, The Husband’s Secret) and really enjoyed them.
But back to My Sister, the Serial Killer. This is such a fun, fast-paced book that involves murder, complicated relationships, and sisterly love. I really liked the writing style and short chapters, which allow you to fly right through this story. I also loved how author Oyinkan Braithwaite set the story in her hometown of Lagos, Nigeria and infused her culture — including food, slang and social norms — into the novel.
💥TL;DR: This is the perfect summer read for those who like fun and quirky stories. The depiction of the sister relationship is a standout as it's both infuriating and totally relatable. 5/5
